How to Quickly and Easily Clean Grungy Shower Curtains

Shower curtains and curtain liners that are dirty or getting old don’t always need to be thrown out. You can easily clean them and return them to like-new condition in no time, saving both time and money when you do occasional house cleaning projects.

Check out these shower curtain and liner cleaning tips!

Easy way to clean a shower curtain

You need to take more care when cleaning a cloth shower curtain than a plastic curtain liner.

  1. Take down the shower curtain.
  2. Set your machine to the largest load setting, then fill with warm water.
  3. Add a cup of white vinegar and a few drops of detergent to the water.
  4. Place the cloth shower curtain into the machine, and set your machine to its most gentle setting.
  5. Once the cycle is done, hang the curtain back on its rod to air dry.

Washing a plastic shower curtain

You can wash a plastic shower curtain in the washing machine, but be sure to:

  • ⬥ Use a cool setting
  • ⬥ Add one or two bath towels to the load
  • ⬥ Air dry – never use the dryer

Use either half a cup of color-safe bleach, vinegar or detergent and a few towels on a cool setting. Take care not to mix the cleaning solutions as they could cause a bad reaction when combined.

If you want to kill mold spores or remove mildew, bleach is the best choice. To dry your plastic curtain, simply hang it back up.

Cleaning a shower curtain liner

Simply take the curtain down and add to your washing machine on a gentle setting. Add one or two bath towels to help with scrubbing the liner, then hang to dry.

Cleaning the curtain liner this way helps to remove built-up mold or mildew, and can save you the cost of a new liner.

Cleaning your shower curtain without removing it

Fill a plastic or glass bottle with one part white vinegar and four parts water. Spray the shower side of the curtain from top to bottom, and on the outside of the curtain where it touches the tub or shower walls.

Let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse with clear water.

Clean your shower curtain rings

As you wash your shower curtain or curtain liner, clean your shower curtain rings.

All sorts of soap scum and dust can get on your shower curtain rings, making them pretty dirty and dingy.

Fill your bathroom sink with a cup of white vinegar and hot water. Let your shower curtain rings soak while the curtain and/or liner are in the wash.

After they have soaked for a while, rinse the rings off and use a scrub brush or rag to remove any soap scum that might remain.

Then, place them back on the shower rod (after wiping it off too) and let dry.
