Organizing Hacks for Your Tools

Once you start sorting your tools in various ways, you’ll experience the bitter-sweet pleasure of trying to figure out what tool configuration suits you the best.

Whether it’s using some compartments you’ve awarded a special purpose by using them for storage of some specific items, or simply hanging your drills ‘n’ other power tools from clothes line-like structure, you can organize your workshop space in a wide variety of ways.

In this article, we’re going to propose to you a couple of arrangements you can employ in your garage or workshop so that you can have quick access to your tools!

Right then, without further ado, here’s the deal.

Organizing Zones for Different Tools

One of the first ‘tenets’ of tool-organizing’ would be to designated different zones for various groups of tools.

For example, all power tools should go into one zone, while hand tools can go somewhere else. This way, you can always know where to head whenever you need to do fix something, for example.

For this way of organizing to be efficient, however, you need to have more advanced knowledge of power tools, so you can arrange them according to advanced specifications. For example, all tools related to woodworking can go in one corner. Or, all tools used for drilling holes go here.

It depends on your line of work, and what sort of pursuits you have with your tools.

A Wall Panel with Containers

If you have a wall you’re not using for something else, you can turn it into a panel onto which you can then arrange different containers.

The main idea here is to utilize this vertical space to the best of your ability, as this will free up some other patch of your workshop for other tools, a fizzy drink fridge, materials, you name it! So, the standard process is the following – get a wall panel, install it on the wall of your choice, and then stick a bunch of containers onto it, into which you can place some tools and parts you’ll need later on to work with.

Also, while you’re at it, nothing is stopping you from labeling those boxes, as well. So, do consider doing that, too. (Especially if all the plastic containers look alike, and your memory is not the best these days.) The containers, of course, don’t need to be made of plastic, either. Wooden ones or metal models, such as the ones that come from Sitecraft, for example, will also do an excellent job.

Mobile Work Bench

If you tend to change locations often as a part of your line of work, or just like to have your most essential tools readily available to you at different locations, getting a mobile workbench can be just what you’ve been looking for.

So, the idea is simple enough – get a mobile workbench, stuff it with a variety of tools and parts of your choice, and then move it about to your heart’s content!

As its name itself suggests, a mobile workbench allows you to move your tools, so that they can always be close to you. This can be handy for folks who use their tools as a part of their profession and work with them daily.

Indeed, hauling heavy equipment with you wherever you go can be quite a futile pursuit and not only that – you can easily earn a bad back after a while if you’re not careful!

Store Nuts ‘n’ Bolts In Clean Jars

Other than serving out grandmas make jams and other fruit-based delicacies, clean jars can also be an excellent way to store your nuts and bolts in!

The thing is unless stored properly in containers, nuts and bolts tend to get lost quite easily, so using some sort of container that will keep these all together and well preserved is of utmost importance for your nut & bolt collection.

The thing about clear jars is – they’re clear, so you won’t have to do much in the department of labeling, so to speak because you can see straight away what sorts of secrets these jars are hiding. (And by secrets, we mean nuts & bolts, of course.

Organize a Battery-Charging Station

If you own plenty of modern power tools, chances are – you’ll have plenty of batteries to charge up at the end of a workday. So, instead of charging up your power drill in the bathroom and your automatic screwdriver in the kitchen, why not make a charging station with multiple outlets right in your garage or workshop!

This way, you can keep all your relevant tools lumped together and charge them up at the same time!

All things considered, having a clear idea of where your tools are at any given point during the day and night is essential for increasing every handyman’s organizational prowess, so to speak. So, to get the most out of your home tool organization, aim to utilize both horizontal AND vertical space, use different containers, and take the needs of your tools into consideration, as well!
